In the fall, we hosted 30 members of the Rutgers University Alumni Association (RUAA) for a National Day of Service project. Volunteers of all ages stuffed nearly 300 parent goodie bags for parents of pediatric patients at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital. Goodie bags contained packs of tissues, hand sanitizer, lip gloss, lotion, notepads, bottled water – as well as Rutgers logo items like pens and magnets. All of the items were donated by the RUAA. The group also created handmade cards for the patients. The stresses of caring for a hospitalized child can really take a toll on parents, who often sacrifice work, rest, and time with other family members to be with their child as much as possible. The parents who received goodie bags have been overwhelmed with the gesture. They expressed how thoughtful it was that others recognized how difficult their experience might be and cared about them as well. The event was such a success that we hope to partner with the RUAA next fall for another volunteer project, including involving some RWJ employee alumni!
