The
Wells Society: Remembering Our Beginnings
In
1888, New Brunswick community leader and volunteer Grace Tileston
Wells provided the funds to build and furnish the hospitals
first building on Somerset Street. She did so to honor her late husband
John Wells.
In
1916, Mrs. Wells said, "I built the little hospital as a cottage
hospital, as it was all the town required. It has done good work.
Now, a larger hospital is needed
" With that statement,
Mrs. Wells agreed to have the hospital renamed Middlesex General Hospital
to accommodate the growing area surrounding New Brunswick. Today,
what started as a "little hospital" is now one of the nations
leading academic heath centers: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
To honor Grace Tileston Wells, whose generosity and forethought contributed
so importantly to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital of today,
The Wells Society has been established. This program recognizes and
pays tribute to those individuals who have made and planned giftsinvestments
in the future of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. You are
invited to become a member of The Wells Society. By becoming a member,
you join with others who recognize the important role of the Hospital
to the future health of our community, people who support the Hospitals
four-fold mission of excellence in patient care, outreach to the communities
we serve, research into the causes and cures of medical problems and
education of the next generation of caregivers.
