The Wells Society: Remembering Our Beginnings

In 1888, New Brunswick community leader and volunteer Grace Tileston Wells provided the funds to build and furnish the hospital’s first building on Somerset Street. She did so to honor her late husband John Wells.

In 1916, Mrs. Wells said, "I built the little hospital as a cottage hospital, as it was all the town required. It has done good work. Now, a larger hospital is needed…" With that statement, Mrs. Wells agreed to have the hospital renamed Middlesex General Hospital to accommodate the growing area surrounding New Brunswick. Today, what started as a "little hospital" is now one of the nation’s leading academic heath centers: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. To honor Grace Tileston Wells, whose generosity and forethought contributed so importantly to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital of today, The Wells Society has been established. This program recognizes and pays tribute to those individuals who have made and planned gifts—investments in the future of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. You are invited to become a member of The Wells Society. By becoming a member, you join with others who recognize the important role of the Hospital to the future health of our community, people who support the Hospital’s four-fold mission of excellence in patient care, outreach to the communities we serve, research into the causes and cures of medical problems and education of the next generation of caregivers.

WHY A PLANNED GIFT TO ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL?

It is the key to ensuring a strong and promising future for healthcare delivery in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital tradition.
It may have important economic advantages for you and your heirs.
It may enable you to make a much larger gift than you ever dreamed possible, thus providing you and your family with great personal satisfaction.
It may be a very effective tax planning strategy. Planned gifts can be structured to help you save income and your estate may avoid being substantially reduced by capital gains, estate and gift taxes.
The income from certain life-income plans—our Pooled Income Fund or Charitable Gift Annuity program, for example—may help you to transform low-yielding investments into a new source of income for yourself and/or other family members.

There are many ways to consider supporting the future of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. These include:

A Bequest in Your Will
The Pooled Income Fund
Charitable Gift Annuities
Charitable Remainder Trusts
Charitable Lead Trusts
A Gift of Real Estate
A Gift of Life Insurance
A Gift from Your Retirement Plan
Financial Planning and Recordkeeping

The Wells Society exists to encourage charitable gifts that provide the greatest benefit to you, to your family and finally, to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. As a member, you will be invited to the annual luncheon for the Society and be invited to participate in the many activities planned for this very special group of donors.
