This constant quest for excellence requires ongoing investments in new technologies and treatments, advanced research and expanded facilities.
The Campaign for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital celebrates RWJUH’s 125-plus-year history of innovation and access – and its bright future of continuing and expanding excellence in a new era of medical innovation.
This ambitious campaign includes a $75-million, multi-tiered set of capital and programmatic initiatives including the projects highlighted below.

Selected Initiatives
A Pediatric Medical Campus for New Jersey
Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Jersey’s only free-standing pediatric hospital, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary in 2011. Even as this milestone is being recognized, implementation of the next level of pediatric care is taking place -- attainment of a true “pediatric campus.” This culmination of services is now unfolding at RWJUH.
In the history of New Jersey “from the bench to the bedside” has never existed with regard to children’s medicine. This can no longer be said. Indeed, what is taking place at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is enabling “from the bench to the bedside” (research to implementation) to become a reality – and more.
Funding is required to continue to enhance the capabilities of our pediatric campus and to sustain its continuing evolution.
Clinatron 250 Proton Beam Radiotherapy (PBRT) System™
This revolutionary cancer treatment will allow physicians to target tumors with increased precision – an especially critical benefit for pediatric patients. RWJUH will be one of only three hospitals in the nation to offer the PBRT.
Breast Care Connection
This unique program is dedicated to navigating patients through all aspects of breast health in a private, female-friendly environment. Patients and their families will receive personalized guidance from experts on a full range of specialty services, including mammography, breast surgery, plastic surgery, oncology, radiation treatment, and counseling and support services.
Cardiovascular Institute of New Jersey (CVINJ) and Cardiac Electrophysiology Expansion
The mission of CVINJ is to become one of the pre-eminent cardiovascular centers in the country and New Jersey in clinical care, research, education, and community outreach. To help fulfill this mission, RWJUH will modernize, renovate, and expand the existing cardiac care facilities with state-of-the-art technology.
Endoscopy Suite Expansion
RWJUH has emerged as the regional leader in interventional endoscopy, which is used to treat patients with a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. This project will more than double the size of the current suite and incorporate some of the most advanced technologies available.
Emergency Department Expansion
This vital area of health care for the community will be expanded to accommodate the extraordinary increase in demand over the past decade. The expansion will include more spacious trauma bays; features to enhance patient privacy; a new ambulance entrance; a new mobile intensive care unit for NICU babies; and sophisticated new technology in support of the department’s Level One Trauma Center.
Land Acquisition Fund
Since 1991, when RWJUH received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, it has used the monies judiciously to acquire land to house reputable and necessary services on our campus – The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the planned Cardiovascular Institute, the Child Health Institute of New Jersey, The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital, PSE&G Children’s Specialized Hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House are a few examples. Replenishment of the Land Acquisition Fund is an essential priority for maintaining the momentum and capability of future growth and expansion.
Nursing Education Fund
RWJUH was the seventh hospital in the country to obtain Magnet Designation, the highest award for nursing, and only the fourth to maintain the accreditation on continuous cycles since that first honor. The hospital is determined to provide continuing education for the nursing staff through two new educational programs: the use of a Simulation Center, a learning environment that allows the nurse to experience real life situations prior to clinical orientation; and, the implementation of an on-line program which would provide information on areas such as critical care, EKG, trauma, fire safety, patient safety and policies and procedures.
Pediatric Palliative Care Fund
This fund is necessary to forge an innovative approach to palliative home care for our youngest and most vulnerable cancer patients at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital who deserve excellent clinical treatment and healthcare services outside of the hospital. New equipment to accommodate pediatric patients while they’re still hospital-based, such as direct digital radiography to reduce radiation time and dose for children, will also be required.
RWJUH and RWJMS Innovation Fund
The hospital is home to departments that provide superior medical treatments and clinical services. To continue to thrust these areas of medicine forward, the attraction and retention of physicians of distinction is imperative. Systematic funding would allow the recruitment of nationally-recognized physicians which would provide the excellence for world class medical prominence.
